Thorns That Choke Out God’s Word (Sermon)
June 9, 2026
In a recent blog post, I shared a sermon on the importance of all believers being immersed in the Word of God. Psalm 1:1-3 gives us a picture of the person who prioritizes a love for the Scriptures:
Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.
First we see a turning away from sin and godlessness, and then we see a delighting in God’s Word. The result of this combination is a life of fruitfulness and stability in the Lord. If we want this promise, we must fulfill the conditions. Do you turn from unrighteousness? Do you delight in the law of the Lord? If those verses do not describe you, there is an invitation for you to commit yourself afresh to this lifestyle.
The Scriptures give us a revelation of who God is. They teach us how to live and what to believe, nourish our spirit, and guide our steps. The Word is a weapon against temptation and every attack of the devil. The Bible instructs, corrects, and equips us. There is inexhaustible treasure in God’s Word!
How to Immerse Yourself in God’s Word
I want to quickly outline four ways that you can immerse yourself in the Scriptures. As you put these into practice, you will grow in the knowledge of God and become more established in Him.
1. Read: First, we must simply read God’s Word. All believers should read through the whole Bible on a regular basis. Don’t just stick with your favorite passages–read Genesis through Revelation regularly. We need all of Scripture to guide and equip us (see 2 Timothy 3:16-17). Psalm 119:160 says, ‘The entirety of Your word is truth.’
If you will read 3-4 chapters a day, you will go through the whole Bible in one year. If you read seven chapters a day, you will go through twice. Read ten chapters a day and you will make it through the whole Bible three times in a year. It takes some discipline, but it is well worth it. This is God’s Word we are talking about–how could we not invest the time to consistently read through it?
2. Study: Another way to immerse ourselves in the Word is to study the Scriptures. This is when we take extra time digging into particular passages or subjects, look up words in the original languages, and compare passages with other passages. As we dig into the Word in this way, we will find the treasure that the Lord has placed there for us.
3. Meditate: To meditate on the Scriptures is to ponder, chew on, and deeply think about portions of Scripture. When we meditate on God’s Word in this way, the Holy Spirit helps to illuminate certain truths to us. Aspects of God’s nature and ways become clearer, and insights into His Word are more frequent when we make it a practice to meditate on the Scriptures.
4. Memorize: Lastly, when we memorize verses and passages of the Bible, the Word enters into our hearts and minds in a deeper way. I have found that memorizing Scripture is a rich spiritual discipline that bears great fruit. Start small, with a verse or two at a time, and then build up to longer passages. Think about the verses and rehearse them as you go about your day. God’s Word will strengthen you and be more accessible to you as you commit it to memory.
Wherever you are at in your walk with the Lord, keep in mind that we never outgrow our need for the Bible. God’s Word is living, powerful, and inexhaustible in nature. Consider these four ways to immerse yourself in the Scriptures and ask the Holy Spirit what steps to take. As you delight yourself in the Word, He will plant you like a tree by the waters!
