Sexual Sin, Unclean Spirits, and Freedom from Pornography
January 14, 2021Deliverance is Not an End in Itself – Getting Established in Freedom
February 1, 2021My new book, Setting Captives Free, is filled with biblical teaching, but also modern-day testimonies of deliverance from evil spirits. The following is an excerpt from Chapter Six which tells a powerful story of a man set free after many years of addiction to heroin. Check it out and be encouraged!
Breaking the Chains of Addiction
What about addictions to substances? Can there be a demonic influence in alcoholism, drug abuse, and other addictions? Yes, absolutely. Drug use and demonic influence go hand-in-hand, and using illicit drugs can be a gateway to evil spirits. We are told to be sober-minded and self-controlled. Drunkenness is a sin that leads to debauchery (see Ephesians 5:18). Altering our state of mind can open us up to demonic spirits, not to mention the bondage and enslavement to the drugs or alcohol that can happen.
Below is a testimony from a friend of mine who is involved in leadership at Threshold Church, where I serve as pastor. He and his wife went to pray for a friend of theirs who had a long-standing addiction to heroin. At the time they prayed for him, they were newer to our church and deliverance was a relatively new concept for them.
My wife and I had been attending Threshold Church for a little over a year prior to this deliverance experience. Prior to attending Threshold under the ministry of Pastor Jake, we had a very basic understanding of deliverance. We understood the importance and need for Christians to be set free, but up to this point we had never experienced an actual deliverance. So, the testimony we are about to share is one that comes from a place of humility and brokenness for those who need to be set free.
In 2016 we planned a trip to Florida to visit some close friends. We had made the decision to take the whole family which included our two small children, both under two years of age at the time. The purpose of this visit was not to see the beautiful ocean or to enjoy a relaxing vacation. The purpose for this trip was to see our dear friend, who had been addicted to heroin for over 10 years, set free. We purposely didn’t tell close family and friends about our trip because we didn’t want the words of fear and doubt to consume our thoughts and speech.
We made the choice to stay in our friend’s home during this trip with the intention of having the opportunity to comfort his wife and possible pray with them as a couple. Our friend was actively using during our stay so it was difficult to have logical conversations. However, this wasn’t going to stop us; we had been sent on a mission and we desired to see it completed.
It was our last night in Florida and we had yet to see any signs of our friend wanting to be set free, but the Spirit of our God had plans for that night, plans that would change all of our lives. Around 9:00 PM we asked our friend again if he was ready to be free. He stated, “No, not yet.” This was hard to hear but we kept pressing him and asking. Finally, around 9:30 PM he walked out of his bedroom with his small bag of heroin and needles. He then said, “I’m ready.” At first this came as a shock, but we quickly moved to action. We took him outside and burned the remaining bag of heroin in a bonfire. During this time, he kept stating, “I can’t do this, I can’t do this.” We then walked inside and sat down.
At first, we kept the prayers very basic. We had never done a deliverance meeting before, but knew the power of our God and the leading of the Holy Spirit. After ten minutes or so I kept hearing the Holy Spirit say, “Pray for the spirit of addiction to be broken.” At first, I tried to justify why it wasn’t the right time, but the Spirit of God kept pressing and we started to pray against the spirit of addiction. We gathered around our friend to pray and after about five minutes of this, he started to breathe heavy and make growling sounds. We had no idea what was happening, but kept praying. I then looked directly at my friend and said, “What is your name?” (This was what I read in the Bible and all I knew.) He then looked up, his eyes had turned jet black, and he stated, “Osalge.” I then said, “How many demons are in you?” He responded, “289.”
At this point all I could think about was the fact that we needed help! We continued to command Osalge to come out and all 289 demons with him. Our friend began to growl louder and breathe heavier and heavier. He then threw himself onto the ground and began to count. I quickly opened the door and as we commanded the spirits to leave him and the home. Our friend continued to count, all the way until he reached 289. It then looked like someone punched him in the chest as he fell to the ground.
The room got quiet as we prepared ourselves for round two! He laid on the floor for what seemed like an eternity. To our amazement, he then got up and stared to sing in tongues. We looked at one another and questioned what was happening, but he continued to sing and then went to his kitchen and grabbed oil from his cupboard. He went around his house and covered above the entryways with the oil. We all just watched as the act of deliverance was taking place. After 30 minutes or so, he stopped and looked at all of us and asked, “What just happened?” We looked at him and said, “The Spirit of the living God has delivered you.” It was around 2:00 AM at this point and our friend who had been tormented by the spirit of addiction for over 10 years had been set free.
What a powerful testimony! To this day, several years later, their friend is free from the addiction that had kept him bound for so long. Addiction is powerful, but there truly is deliverance in the name of Jesus for those who repent and believe.
