Sermon: The Gate of Heaven

This past Sunday I preached a message at Threshold Church called The Gate of Heaven.

Genesis 28 records a dream that Jacob had, in which he saw a ladder going from earth to heaven, and angels of God ascending and descending on it. When he awoke from this encounter he made this statement: “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!” (Genesis 28:17).

This is the first reference to the house of God in Scripture, and it is also called the gate of heaven–that is, heaven’s access point into the earth.

In John 1:51 Jesus made a reference to this dream when He said, “You shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” Jesus demonstrated what it looked like to be a “gate of heaven.” Everywhere He went He released the influence and resources of heaven into the circumstances around Him.

Now, we as the church are called to be the house of God and gate of heaven in the earth!
