Deliverance from the Spirit of Death

I have recently had several testimonies of people who were set free from a spirit of death. The Bible describes how through the cross of Christ, we can receive deliverance from enslavement to a tormenting fear of death: “Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.” (Hebrews 2:14-15)

When a person has a fascination with death, irrational fear of dying (or of a loved one dying), intrusive thoughts or images of death, or an unwarranted foreboding sense of death looming, a spirit of death might be at work. This spirit is employed by the devil to bring torment to our minds. But Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life, and He can set us free from any tormenting spirit of death.

How Does the Spirit of Death Gain Access?

I have seen that there are various ways that a spirit of death can seek to gain access to a person’s life. Some of them are listed below:

• Traumatic and/or untimely death of a loved one
• Traumatic near-death experience
• Prolonged and life-threatening sickness
• Harboring a deathwish
• Fascination with death
• Having an abortion
• Occult involvement

Delivered from the Spirit of Death

There is a demon called the spirit of death. This is a spirit that seeks to bring terminal sickness, premature death, or tormenting fear of death. It works together with the spirit of infirmity to increase the affliction in a person’s life.

I shared in a previous chapter about a young lady to whom my wife and I ministered, who was having recurring intrusive thoughts of death. She would be driving her car and suddenly she would imagine herself drifting off the road, crashing, and dying. During her teenage years, she had overcome an extended battle with cancer. It was a few years later and she was now cancer free, but was still battling thoughts of death.

I have found that the spirit of death can come in sometimes during major and prolonged sicknesses. When a person is continually faced with the real possibility of death, it can be a traumatic experience. The dark spirit of death can seek to gain a place of influence during these times. It can settle in and hover over a person’s mind, trying to gain a stronghold of fear and torment.

My wife and I led the young woman in a prayer for deliverance and commanded demons to leave. There was resistance at first, but the Holy Spirit broke through and she was powerfully delivered. Not only was she set free from the spirit of death, but several other demons as well. And on top of that, God also completely healed her of a stomach problem that she had been suffering from for three years due to her prior cancer treatments. Her stomach lining had been damaged and she often experienced discomfort and nausea. There was such an atmosphere of the power of God in the room that we had a strong expectation for her to be healed. My wife laid hands on her stomach and we both prayed. There was a gift of faith to declare a new stomach, and her mid-section began to vibrate. She was healed that day and hasn’t had the stomach problems since. We serve a miracle-working God!

This testimony is a great example of the connection between healing and deliverance. As this young woman fought through the battle with cancer, it became an open door for unclean spirits to take advantage of her situation and bring affliction and torment. Though she physically recovered through the medical treatments, she remained in a condition of oppression afterward. When she was delivered from the unclean spirits, there was also healing released for her stomach. Deliverance and healing were intertwined together.

Prayer for Deliverance from the Spirit of Death

If you are being tormented by a spirit pf death, know that there is freedom in the name of Jesus. Below is a sample prayer that you can pray along with. Call on Jesus to set you free!

Heavenly Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus. I submit my life to you, and thank you that the blood of Jesus was shed for me so that I could be forgiven of sin and restored to you. I repent for any way that I have allowed a spirit of death in my life or for any way that I have partnered with it. I renounce the spirit of death in the name of Jesus, and I receive the abundant life that Jesus came to give me. In Jesus’ name, I command the spirit of death to come out of me right now!
